We may be in the height of summer, but HBO is here to remind you that in just a few short weeks, winter is here.
Game of Thrones is choosing to mark the Summer Solstice in the most epic, thunder-stealing way possible by “winterizing” the web.
Starting at 9 a.m. PT, with the release of a brand new Season 7 trailer, winter is spreading across Twitter, Reddit and Google, and you, sweet summer children, have the power to unlock new Season 7 content to prepare you for the great war ahead.
Twitter debuted a new Emoji Engine, complete with a Night King hashflag. To unlock a series of Season 7 character posters, fans were tasked with tagging @GameofThrones, using the hashtag #WinterIsHere and picking an emoji from the regular emoji keyboard, as demonstrated in the example below.
Different emoji unlocked different posters and certain emoji combinations triggered content related to other HBO shows instead of Thrones, like a social scavenger hunt of epic proportions.
Over on Reddit, the site’s iconic mascot, Snoo, has been given a makeover for the occasion meet Jon Snoo:
He’s so angry and adorable!
Reddit is also hosting the site’s first ever branded gift exchange in honor of Game of Thrones Season 7, since the show has the largest fanbase of any television series on the platform, with more than one million subscribers. Sign-ups for the Reddit Gifts exchange are open until June 26, and all the gifts exchanged between Redditors will be Game of Thrones related. Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian is participating too; he’ll be giving away a custom Reddit/Game of Thrones-inspired hoodie.
Even Google is getting in on the Thrones action searching for the show will reveal the new trailer and showcase winter themed gifs and content in the search results, while the Google Knowledge Box is also getting a cool winter-themed makeover.
So go forth onto the internet, noble rangers the night is dark and full of terrors, but at least the year’s longest day is filled with sweet, sweet Game of Thrones goodness.
Game of Thrones Season 7 premieres July 16 at 9 p.m. on HBO.
