Khal Drogo died in the first season of Game of Thrones, but fans haven’t quite called curtains on him yet. Now that we know beloved GOTcharacterscan be resurrected (Jon Snow, for example) fans are starting to speculate that Drogo will rise again.
If you remember, the Khal died after the witchMirri Maz Duur tricked Daenerys into thinking that she’d heal him(after he’s injured in a fight) but lefthim a vegetable instead. In the books, Mirri then told Daenerys that she’d see Drogo again, only:
“…when the sun rises in the West and sets in the East, when the sea goes dry and mountains blow in the wind like leaves, when your womb quickens and you bear a living child…”
So basically, never. Or at least, that’s what we thought.
While Mirri was trying to be cruel to Daenerys – emphasising that her husband was dead, and that she was never going to see him again – people are speculating that she might have also (inadvertently) been making an accidental prophecy, and predicting the resurrection of Drogo.
They think that “the sun” she refers to is actuallyQuentyn Martell (a character that only appears in the books, not on TV), whose house sigil is a sun. Quentyn goes to Westeros, in the west, before heading to Essos, in the east. There, he gets eaten by Daenery’s dragons. (Rises in the west, heads to the east, and then “sets” (dies) there).
The sea going dry could be theDothraki Sea, which Daenerys just happens to mention is undergoing some sort of drought, and then the “mountains blowing in the wind like leaves”? That could either be the fall of the great pyramids of Meereen (again, only in the books), or it could refer to some misfortune befalling The Mountain himself (Gregor Clegane). He might be a monster nowadays, but it could still happen!
The final part of the prophecy refers to Daenerys bearing a living child. Now, in the books she hadn’t been menstruating since she lost her husband and son, but recently, her “moon blood” returned…
Of course, all of these only really apply to the books, but that’s not to say that the Khal won’t be coming back to the Game of Thrones TV show as well.
Actor Jason Momoa is clearly still a die-hard fan of the show, frequently posting instagrams as he watches it, often with captions like “aloha Drogo”…
He also often writes that he’ll see writers David Weiss and Dan Benioff “soon”. Maybe they’re just mates, but we can’t help but wonder if Khal will be back…
